Vision
The New Mexico Commission for the Blind sought to implement the
AWARE case management system that already had
been customized for New Mexico Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
The Commission placed particular emphasis on managing their Independent
Living caseloads and their use of the Window-Eyes screen reader
software.
Approach
Working closely with the Division of Vocational
Rehabilitation, the Commission worked with Alliance to train their
project staff, their technical staff and their counselors. The agency
staff was very involved in the design and development of the Independent
Living case type and associated federal reports.
Results
With a small staff, the Commission successfully
implement the system for participants with Vocational Rehabilitation,
Independent Living and Older Blind case types. With approximately 50% of
the agency using the system with screen reader software, the agency has
been instrumental in providing feedback to Alliance to optimize the
interaction with the Window-Eyes application.
Today
As one of the four agencies that
have been with the Upgrade, Maintenance and Support
program since 1999, the Commission continues to
actively take part in the Users Group working on
Independent Living issues and the Accessibility
Special Interest Group.
Agency Comments
"We have found that (AWARE) is an exceptionally
effective management tool. For example, we have been
able to track and manage expenditures much more
efficiently , resulting in a vastly improved
management of our caseload budget."
